"I have worked with Jam Events at the last four Big Chill festivals. Before that they ran all the bars, and it was clear they had plenty of experience and expertise; my role has been to learn, and help take it forward as we got bigger (currently a 35,000 people event).
I have been running bars for 20 years, but merely in structures built from bricks and mortar, never at outdoor events in a tent, i.e. relatively straightforward. So this really was a whole new area for me, and there's no way I could have done it without the Jam team.
The skills Jam Events have that are required to do this are very broad ranging. The job requires a high degree of preparation, planning and organisation, and that's just in the months before the event. Once at the site, they need to ensure everyone is working to schedule and all systems come together neatly as planned. Inevitably there are always a few problems that cannot be foreseen, and great flexibility and quick thinking is needed to counteract these issues. At times like this the importance of a sense of humour and calm clear-headed thinking are paramount, and all the Jam crew have these vital characteristics and are able to swiftly and effectively deal with any crisis.
